Skye Harvey Unsung Heroes – Individual

Umbrella Multicultural Community Care Services

Teresa is a very dedicated and versatile staff member, always willing to take on new roles and projects and truly going ‘over and above’, even in her own time, to benefit clients.
In her 12 years with Umbrella, Teresa has been a manager in Umbrella’s social support program, assessments department and is now coordinator of the Carer Gateway program. Among her many achievements, Teresa established Umbrella’s Internet Café, the Home@Home program for Polish and Spanish clients, the Multicultural Men’s Shed and organised carer retreats.
Teresa has seen a lot of change – 12 years ago, Umbrella’s largest client group was Polish, while today it is much more diverse, including Italian, Polish, Macedonian and seniors born in English speaking countries. Another big change is better recognition of the role of ‘carer’ within multicultural communities. She attributes this to more information and education, including through her current role.
For Teresa, satisfaction comes from connection with clients and carers and being able to help. Before working with Umbrella, Teresa volunteered with the Polish community, helping organise social gatherings and also fashion parades at Umbrella’s former Bedford office. Looking to the future, Teresa plans to volunteer with Umbrella’s CVS program, visiting socially isolated seniors.
