Meals on Wheels SA/Meals on Wheels Australia

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Meals on Wheels SA (MoWSA) continued to adapt and demonstrate incredible resilience to support the nourishment and wellbeing of South Australia’s most vulnerable community members.

With weekday operations continuing as usual, in line with strict food and safety guidelines, MoWSA delivered 18 percent more meals and supported a 10 percent increase in clients last year. Importantly, the essential, iconic service and its dedicated volunteer workforce ensured no one went hungry, even during the statewide lockdown in late November.

Providing a nutritious meal, a friendly chat and an opportunity for social connection, as well as wellbeing checks via telephone, offered peace of mind to vulnerable South Australians and their families, that they would continue to be supported to live in their homes at a time where it was needed most.

This valuable work would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of MoWSA’s 7,000 volunteers, who stepped up to the plate to ensure the community remained safe, independent, connected and well-nourished.

Meals on Wheels plays an essential role in supporting the nourishment, wellbeing and independence of over 200,000 older Australians each year, with MoWSA alone delivering 4,000 meals every day.
