Netherby Home is a residential aged care facility located in Currie on King Island, an island off the north west coast of Tasmania in the middle of Bass Strait. Netherby is home to 12 residents aged between 70 and 98 all of whom have been long term residents of King Island. Most residents have strong local family and friend support networks and still enjoy community connections beyond Netherby Home.
A priority has been to create full-time positions for both carers and clinical staff in order to provide consistency and continuity of care for residents as well as permanency for staff and predictability for shifts and rosters. Another key priority has been staff training, including palliative care and dementia training. Staff are encouraged to attend training via video conferencing as well as being supported to go off the island for training.
Netherby Home utilises a variety of technology, including video conferencing for medical consultations with specialists in Victoria and Tasmania, alert pendants, sensa mats, nurse call buttons and video cameras for recording special occasions.
A large variety of community engagement is maintained, including Residents and Relatives or Friends Lunches held quarterly that are also attended by the Director of Nursing, administration staff, carers and clinical staff.
