Feros Care

Known for going the extra mile – not just on the road but in the way he lives his life, at 89 years young, Kevin Berger, started off his volunteering life with Feros Care driving a bus seven years ago. The former NRMA mechanic, who can fix just about anything, says ‘I’ve been helping others all my life. I think that’s what I was put on earth for’.

Kevin’s social outings, day trips and fortnightly ladies shopping days became a fixture for residents in Feros Care’s northern NSW aged care facilities. His shopping outings always made time for a coffee, and he initiated his infamous end-of-year Christmas lunches celebrating the year that was. Never missing a day and always with a cheeky sense of humour, he gave nicknames to his fellow travellers, including 90-year-old Mary from Kingscliff who he deemed ‘the seatbelt police’.

His sense of fun on day trips to Murwillumbah, Pottsville and Byron Bay created happy memories and cemented friendships along the way. Retiring from driving the bus didn’t stop Kevin making time to catch up with Feros Care residents for a chat over a coffee.

‘Kevin’s enthusiasm and thoughtful care has helped our residents live their best life,’ says Rebecca Wilkinson, Chief Operations Officer, Residential; and it’s the care of volunteers like Kevin that make a real impact in ensuring older people experience Feros Care’s aim of helping people live connected and bold lives.
