Gymea Community Aid and Information Services

Gymea Community Aid and Information Services received CHSP Innovation Funding in 2019. This was to implement the 16 week Active and Social Program involving 1. Initial assessments with a local physiotherapist at the start and finish 2. Introduction to the gym and a tailored exercise program 3. a selection of 45 minute programs including Zumba, Seniors Boxing, Mat Work Pilates, Barre, Yoga, Triple B, Buff Bands, Moves for All, Tai Chi and Resist Band Work. Facilitated nutrition sessions and sleep clinic. 4 Social outings and graduation celebrations to allow participants to connect socially. The Keeping Active program was developed to cater for participants who had finished the Active and Social Program and wanted to continue to do the classes. The Active and Social and Keeping Active models are well documented and supported by credible data and outcomes. The success of these programs in attracting participants and keeping them engaged has been the social aspect and the opportunities created to keep them connected and feeling part of a supportive group. In 2021 the programs were the NSW/ACT LASA State Award winners and then the same year we were the LASA National Award winners. The success of these programs is a testament to what can be achieved by smaller organisations which are locally based.
