The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including respiratory protective equipment (RPE) such as P2/N95 masks has skyrocketed in the aged care sector with the advent of COVID. All employers have obligations under their respective State or Territory work/occupational health and safety (WHS/OHS) legislation to ensure safe systems of work and protect the health and safety of workers and other persons in the workplace. This extends to ensuring safe and effective use of PPE.

The use of P2/N95 masks attract particular obligations for employers under WHS/OHS legislation. Primarily these are to ensure the RPE provided is a suitable size, fit and is comfortable for workers. As part of the duty to meet those obligations, the only practical way to ensure that RPE is of a suitable size and fit is to undertake fit-testing for each worker required to wear the RPE. Fit-testing measures the effectiveness of the seal between the RPE and the wearer’s face ensuring the selected P2/N95 mask is suitable for each individual worker and must be undertaken before the worker first starts wearing the RPE in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, Australian Standards or other comparable international standard.

We have actively engaged with several of the WHS/OHS regulators across the country and understand they have commenced programs of inspection and enforcement within the aged care sector  regarding adequate respiratory protection programmes including importantly fit testing regimes. It is very important that providers understand how to fulfil their WHS/OHS obligations with the use of P2/N95 masks.

At this webinar we have Mark Reggers, an Occupational Hygienist engaged as an Application Engineering Specialist at 3M Australia (Personal Safety Division) talking us through the importance of respiratory protection in the context of COVID (and other respiratory infections) and what you need to consider to implement a fit testing program within your business. There will be the opportunity to ask questions of Mark during the webinar.
